Description of the Prototype
The rescue parachute deployment system, designed at Brno University of Technology (BUT), has been granted patent protection in the United States. The patent was officially included in the RIV database in 2020 after its approval, while the initial record in Apollo was prepared earlier. The US patent is closely related to a European patent (EP3050805), which was officially included in RIV in 2019 after approval.
European Patent No.: EP3050805
This innovative system introduces a unique method for dynamic parachute extraction from a UAV’s storage compartment. Prior to this invention, no parachute-based rescue systems were used for drones in this weight category. While parachute safety mechanisms existed for gyrocopters, helicopters, and autogyros, UAVs weighing 3 to 10 kg had no comparable solutions—making this patent a groundbreaking and unrivaled innovation.
Key advantages of this patented system include:
- Fully enclosed parachute inside the deployment unit
- Self-weighted parachute (eliminating the need for a metal projectile)
- Increased safety—no risk of injury from flying projectiles during deployment
Justification of Excellence and Social Relevance
These patented UAV rescue systems provide a critical enhancement to aviation safety, directly protecting people and property from potential drone crashes. Following direct knowledge transfer to industry, the technology has been successfully commercialized. Galaxy GRS s.r.o. has fully integrated the system into its product line, marketing it worldwide through international distributors. This innovation is now saving lives and preventing damage, making it a milestone in UAV safety technology.
